The art of being happy lies in the power of finding happiness in common things. At the beginning of each year, many of us make resolutions that we too quickly forget about. Many people want to become the best version of themselves, but somehow they feel stuck. Perhaps you’ve set the goal to take up a yoga class, just to find yourself making excuses why not to go. Changing our habits isn’t easy, and often is a painstakingly slow process.
In order to change who we are, we first have to change how we think.
Unfortunately, changing our deeply ingrained believes isn’t an easy thing to do. Our subconscious conditioning has been taking shape since our childhood. More often than not, we are not aware of our mental patterns and instead project what happens in our inner world onto what happens around us.
Rituals are simple yet powerful practices that bypass the conscious mind and directly influence your subconscious mind. This makes them very efficient at changing deeply ingrained patterns and helping you to move forward in your life. Rituals bring structure into your life, improve your willpower, develop awareness, and bring happiness and contentment into your life.
The following 3 rituals will help you to start your day on a positive note. Each one of them has a different effect. You can start by just adding one of them to your mornings. Once you are ready to begin your day with these 3 rituals, you’ll see your life take shape in a whole new way!
Practice gratitude first thing upon waking. Sit up in your bed, feel into your heart, and express gratitude. You can think of specific people that you appreciate and send them a thought of gratitude. You can send compassion to a person in need. Some people like to think of 3 things that they are grateful for every morning. Or you can simply fill your heart with a general feeling of gratitude.
Make yourself a hot cup of tea and drink it. The whole process from making the tea to drinking the last drop should be done with full awareness, attention, love, and presence. Be aware of every movement that you make while brewing the tea, feel the touch of the tea cup, smell the steam rising up from your mug, and taste the tea on your tongue. Be aware of the thoughts and emotions going through your mind, and try to be fully present with your tea ceremony. Enjoy and get a glimpse of the bliss of being fully present in a simple activity, without doing.
Start your day with a gentle form of exercise. You can go for a walk, bike ride, practice chi gong, or yoga. Whatever movement you choose to do, the important thing is that you do it with full awareness and in full presence. Become fully awake and alive in your body to embody the mind. Embodying the mind will bring you that feeling of wholeness that we are all looking for.
Practice these 3 morning rituals every day and see for yourself how they change your life.
